activity in social studies education. Federally-funded projects and national organizations have experimented with a number of exciting approaches social studies. Underlying these projects has been the search for meaningful goals and more effective teaching strategies. Educators have rejected such vague and generally unteachable goals as to instill an appreciation of the American way of life, replacing these with renewed emphasis on the scholarly disciplines of history and the social sciences. But if the Scylla of the old social studies were vague goals which served as poor guides in the classroom, then the Charybdis of the new social studies may be a return the memorization of factual knowledge. The empty formalism of this method of selecting content can be avoided through selecting those major ideas of the scholarly disciplines which shed light on the current social realities and the needs and interests
