Abstract

In this paper I review Halliday and Hasan's contributions to the study of meaning beyond the clause, and its recontextualization in my work on discourse semantics. The relation of text structure to cohesive devices is illustrated through a text synthesis. The discussion subsequently focuses on the nature of discourse structures and their relation to discourse systems drawing on Lemke's concept of covariate relations and Bateman's invocation of Peirce's concept of abduction. It is suggested that because they involve passages of discourse of indefinite extent, discourse semantic systems can be positioned stratally and metafunctionally in an SFL model of language, but are not for the most part organized by rank.
