Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the mean velocities in an irrotational periodic geophysical traveling surface wave, which propagates in equatorial oceanic regions. Employing the harmonic and complex analysis in combination with exploiting some of the physical structures of the problem, we prove that the horizontal mean velocity is less than the depth-averaged velocity in the frame of reference in which the wave is stationary.
