S. ; Cochran, J. E. Abstract The roots of the characteristic equation at the equilibrium points of the restricted problem of three bodies are presented as functions of the mass parameter, . The explicit solution of this problem is given in an approximate form by a few members of the appropriate Taylor series. The series expansions are in terms of i, , and depending on the location of the equilibrium point and on the nature of the root. Comparison with tabulated results shows that the maximum error is less than one part in 10 for the Jupiter- sun system. For combinations of other planets and the sun the errors are smaller. For the Earth-moon problem, the maximum error is less than one part in 102.
