Abstract

ABSTRACT The mean magnetic susceptibility of seven till units in east-central Illinois range from 19 to 90 10-6 cgs. Magnetic susceptibility reflects the primary mineralogy of the till, and the range in magnetic susceptibility within a till unit is generally not great. Used in conjunction with field and other laboratory criteria, magnetic susceptibility is another tool in stratigraphic differentiation and correlation. Groupings of till units with similar susceptibility values suggest that these tills were derived from at least two of the major glacial lobes in the central United States.
