Abstract

A method is described whereby mean excitation energies for molecules in the gaseous, liquid or solid state can be determined using the additivity rule modified for the chemical bond strengths and values of the mean excitation energies for the 'free' constituent atoms in the relevant phase. The Bethe-Bloch theory may then be applied to determine accurate mass stopping powers for fast charged particles.
