Abstract

A 6? conical diffuser connecting two long straight circular pipes was used to determine the mean energy characteristics in gradually expanding air flow. Mean pressures, mean velocities, turbulent shear stresses, and longitudinal, transverse, and circumferential velocity fluctuations were measured not only in the diffuser but for a distance of 50 downstream pipe diameters downstream from the end of the diffuser. A detailed analysis of the flow was made using the differential and integrated mean energy equations. Particular emphasis was placed in determining the process of uniform flow reestablishment in the downstream pipe.
