Abstract
Purpose: To standardize the tendon tapping using a pendulum type hammer. Method: a pendulum type instrumented hammer was used to tap the patellar tendon and record the tapping force, while the reflex angular speed of the knee joint and the quadriceps electromyography (EMG) were recorded as measures of the reflex response. The subject is a healthy volunteer exhibiting normal reflexes. Results: Each tapping and reflex response parameter was repeatable. Conclusions: With appropriate simplifications, the pendulum type hammer may develop the reliability of the tendon reflex measurement.
