Abstract

An Evaluation on the Mistakes Determined in Writing Course of Mersin University Education Faculty st Grade Students(Petition Texts). This research had been undertaken on the petition samples written by the students of the 1st Grade of the Education Faculty of Mersin University in their Written Expression classes. During the research, the mistakes that have been made by the students of the 1st grade in their petition samples that have been written in different topics have been identified where the aim had been to develop solution offers for the correction of these and some other mistakes that have been found in other forms of written expression during such relevant practices. For the said research, firstly within the context of the relevant class, the petition samples written on various topics that have been assigned to or that have been selected by the students of 1st grade of the Education Faculty of Mersin University had been examined and then the connection between the mistakes that have been found in the said petitions and the stylistic and linguistic characteristics specific of the form had been set forth. As a result of the research it has been ascertained that the students were not aware of the authority to whom the petition is going to be addressed to; that the petition did not follow certain stylistic and linguistic rules; that the students did not pay attention to aspects such as the use of language, page layout and spelling rules that constitute the common grounds for all of the written expression forms; that the punctuation marks had either been left out or used in the wrong manner; that there were incomprehensibilities both at the word level and sentence level. Within the research, some suggestions for a solution to the said and alike problems of the students had been set forth in ways such as the possession of a certain background and a rich vocabulary and such as making more practises.
