Abstract

Magnetic and electronic states of Co 3d and Pt 5d electrons in a ferromagnetic alloy, CoPt 3, are investigated by measuring magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in photoabsorption. Contribution of the orbital angular momentum in the 3d magnetic moment is estimated using the MCD of Co 2p XAS. MCD with a quite unusual line shape was found for Pt 4f XAS and the origin of the line-shape is shown to be the strong Fano interference.
