Abstract

Day-to-day operation of the UK General Practice Research Database (GPRD) was transferred to the UK Medicines Control Agency (MCA) from the Office of National Statistics on 1st October 1999. During a presentation at the Sue Wood Memorial Symposium ‘Pharmacovigilance into the new millennium’ [London, UK; October, 1999], Dr Louise Wood, manager of the GPRD at the MCA, discussed why the MCA had adopted the GPRD and how it would be investing in the database to optimise its utility and to manage its evolution to support a broader range of public health activities.
