Abstract

This paper presents the first detailed investigation of the maximum gap (Δmax) in the pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles in individual events and hence the diffractive dissociation for proton–emulsion interactions over the entire, machine energy range (22.6–400) GeV/c. The location of the Δmax in an event has been studied, and the experimental Δmax distribution at all energies has been compared with the theoretical prediction of Jones and Snider.
