Abstract

This paper presents the calculation of the switching angles which provide maximum overall efficiency for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. Voltage, current and torque control strategies are considered. Particular concern is given to the effect of speed variation on the switching angles at maximum efficiency operation. For a variable torque load, a dynamic model of the SRM is developed based on the motor flux characteristics. Dynamic simulation is employed to determine the effect of switching angles variation on the overall SRM drive efficiency. A brief description the three control strategies and a computer model are presented besides the simulation results. Finally, a control strategy for running the SRM at maximum efficiency is suggested based on the obtained results.
