Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing in a content area is believed to move students from rote learning to an active role promoting student responsibility in their educational development. Writing in the mathematics classroom supports a better understanding of basic concepts, promotes various techniques believed to be conducive to mathematical learning: increased communication, accommodation of diverse learning styles, individualized and prescriptive instruction, and self-assessment of knowledge. All of the above parallel current mathematics reform.
