Abstract

It is probably one of the worst marriage proposals in literary history: “I’m asking you to marry me, you little fool.” It is also a tough line to deliver. In the 1940 adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's novel Rebecca, Alfred Hitchcock and Laurence Olivier handle it cannily—Maxim de Winter directs his offhand, is-he-serious proposal at Joan Fontaine (his nameless future bride) through the bathroom door as he gets changed. Perfect. And Olivier—at his most sexy and dangerous in this film—keeps up the manipulative power-play throughout.
