Abstract

This is a fascinating biography, a biography full of art and science, anatomy and surgery. As Albrecht von Haller deemed Herman Boerhaave the communis Europe praeceptor (teacher of the whole of Europe), I would call Max Brodel of Johns Hopkins the teacher of the entire United States for medical illustration. I would need pages and pages to name his students and the students of his students. At a remove, Brodel spread the real art of medical education all over the country, including to my own medical school, in the person of Kathleen MacKay. Brodel's first book,The Vermiform Appendix and Its Diseases(1905), by Kelly and Hurdon, came to my attention in the late 1950s. I still have it, with its 827 pages and 398 figures, 117 of them by Brodel, and I still admire the authors' and Brodel's art. Medical illustration has a long history. If we consider
