Abstract

Abstract This article demonstrates how Mauri is a contextually relevant detail for the Roman readers of 23 BCE, as Mauri is the only reading known in the manuscripts. It is by the invention of Faber and defense of Bentley that we have Marsi. Mauri offers illuminating specificities germane to the historical and literary context with Virgil and Sallust as clear literary precedents. Yet, the term Marsi has been accepted over Mauri for 300 years, since Bentley’s famous defense.
