Abstract

This article explores the later life of ‘Mauchline Belle’ Jean Smith in Glasgow, specifically the school she operated for almost 30 years. It identifies the location of her Girls’ School still extant in Virginia Street, Glasgow. The article further explores her legacy through the lives of her family, whom she raised almost single handedly after her husband’s premature death: most notably her son Robert Smith Candlish D.D., who was home schooled by his mother, sisters and elder brother. Robert was later to become Moderator of the Free Church and an educational reformer who championed the normal school system and advocated the transference of circa 500 school buildings under the Education Act 1872 to the school boards of local parishes, benefiting countless children.
