Abstract

The temporary covering of the graft with moist sawdust has been reported effective in improving callus formation and grafting success in Persian walnut. In this study, we compared the effects of two kinds of grafting covers (sawdust and perlite) and no covering (control) on callus quality, number of callused grafts, graft take, graft survival and scion growth. Two cultivars including 'Pedro' and 'Chandler' were used as the scion cultivar. A modified bark grafting method was used to graft the main branches in the scaffolds of 10- to 15-year-old walnut trees before mid April, 2008. The highest graft take (75.00%) and survival (66.04%) and the lowest graft take (10.00%) and survival (8.33%) were observed with sawdust cover and no covering, respectively. Similar trends were observed for callus quality and a number of graft characters. The effect of scion was not statistically significant on all investigated characters except scion growth. Our observations provide more support on the efficacy of moist sawdust for improvement of grafting success in Persian walnut.
