Abstract

Proximal tubule water transport is transcellular. The neonatal rabbit proximal tubule has a higher transepithelial osmotic water permeability (Pf) than the adult segment (Quigley & Baum, AJP;271:F871,1996). This maturational change in transepithelial water transport could be due to differences in the apical or basolateral membrane or the intracellular compartment. The present study examined the maturational changes of the proximal tubule apical membrane by measuring the Pf of renal brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV).
