When I was eighteen I wanted to be a chemist. Young people should study chemistry because they will be able to change the world for the better. The most significant historic event of the past 100 years was for me, personally, the German reunification. The most important future applications of my research are efficient (and hopefully applicable) homogeneous catalytic processes. My first experiment was the preparation of “universal sulfate” in my home laboratory by dissolving nails, screws, and nuts in concentrated sulfuric acid. I advise my students to “Macht viel, dann geht auch viel” (borrowed from my academic grandfather, the late Herbert Schumann), loosely translated: Do many things (in the lab), then many things will work! My favorite band is Volbeat at present; the best bands of all (my) time are Queen and AC/DC. My favorite structure is that of the bis(cycloheptatrienyl)uranium anion, [(η7-C7H7)U]−, a sandwich complex with D7d symmetry.
