Abstract

This article contextualizes Matthew’s Gospel, which is the focus of this year’s international lectionary readings. The Gospel of Matthew is understood for its place in early Christianity, formative Judaism, and within the Roman Empire. Further, some key theological and ethical aspects of Matthew’s Gospel are considered, as well as the impact of Matthew in history.
