Abstract

When I was first asked to participate in my trust's modern matron initiative, I was sceptical and unsure of the purpose. It has always been part of popular mythology that matrons are some special breed of people, sub-human or super-human by turn, a peculiar hybrid of dragon-lady and nun. There have been numerous films, books and comic stories which have encouraged the image of matrons as tyrants, devoting their lives to running hospitals with iron rods, coldly interrupting medical pranksters and ensuring staff and patients obey the rules.
