Abstract

Creativity begins with ideas. Scholars have addressed the conditions, factors, and processes that stimulate creativity. However, a technical framework for systematically exploring, manipulating, evaluating, ranking, and improving creative and weak ideas remains a challenge. We formalize an approach grounded on scholars' definition of creativity as the ability to create simultaneously novel and useful artifacts. We formalize ideas as a matrix construct of attributes and features. We also formalize a set of creativity operators that use matrix-expressed ideas as operands to generate, evaluate, rank, and improve ideas. This holistic framework, in which idea matrices and matrix-algebra creativity operators are used to represent ideas and operations, presents a new repeatable method for operationalizing creativity. We illustrate our method by considering real-world products.
