Abstract

Introduction Obstructive pulmonary disease is considered as an inflammatory condition, and osteoporosis is one of its complication. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are found in extracellular matrix, especially in lungs, and have a regulatory function in bone turnover. Aim The aim was to show a correlation between circulating MMP, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), and bone mass density in obstructive pulmonary disease. Materials and methods A total of 50 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as 20 healthy persons were included in the study. They were subjected to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measurement, and levels of MMP and TIMPs were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Our results show significant correlation between MMP9 and TIMP and bone mineral density in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in comparison with controls. Conclusion MMP9 could be a marker of osteopenia or osteoporosis in obstructive pulmonary disease.
