Abstract

The two-band model of Cohen and Blount is used to investigate the wave functions and matrix elements for electrons in bismuth. After a suitable transformation the Hamiltonian takes the Dirac form, and may be studied with the methods developed for it. The matrix elements determine the selection rules for both intraband and interband electron transitions in bismuth. These are in agreement with those observed in interband magneto-optic experiments.
