Abstract

Capacitive shunt compensation of a three phase power distribution network is usually done to improve the voltage level in the network buses and / or to reduce the active power losses. Most often this compensation could be made also for network load balancing, which will also have a positive effect on voltage quality. For this, a shunt unbalance capacitive compensation is necessary. The compensation is obtained using a delta compensator load sized depending on the load structure. This connection allows a redistribution of active power and reactive power between the phases of the network so that the ensemble load-compensator is perfectly balanced and has the desired power factor. This paper presents a MatLab simulation for the study of the mechanism for load balancing by capacitive unbalance shunt compensation in a low voltage three-phase three-wire network, an application that can be useful in electrical engineering teaching.
