Abstract
Changes in rates of responding after the administration of many drugs have been found to be related in a systematic manner to the rates of responding prior to drug administration. Recent controversy has centered on whether the drug effect should be measured in absolute or relative terms and on the limits imposed on the mathematical statement of the relationship by the maximum possible rate of responding, R m. The present paper suggests that both a redefinition of effect in absolute terms rather than in terms of change, and an incorporation of R m into the mathematical formulation, are unnecessary.
