Abstract

This paper examines the nature of the employment of mathematics graduates of first degrees from universities and polytechnics in the U.K. Initially the sectoral distribution of first employment destinations of mathematics graduates is investigated. The results are then disaggregated by sex and the degree of correspondence of the employment experience of male and female graduates is identified. Finally, systematic differences in the employment destinations of mathematics graduates of universities and polytechnics are examined. Mathematics graduates are found to enjoy propitious employment prospects compared to graduates of most other disciplines. Unemployment and temporary employment of mathematics graduates was relatively low and mathematics graduates were recruited to a disproportionately large extent in the expanding sectors of the economy.
