Abstract

The author describes an ongoing statewide effort in Georgia to improve the quality of preservice teacher education programs in middle school mathematics and science. This effort is called POET (Principles of Educating Teachers) and is one of several statewide initiatives to reform K-12 mathematics and science education curriculum and teaching currently underway in Georgia. The goals, foundations, processes, and activities of POET are described along with what the POET staff has learned about statewide teacher education reform. The complexities and challenges of making long-term improvements in teacher education programs are discussed.
