Abstract

Abstract The title of an article published by Alan Bishop, ‘Western mathematics: the secret weapon of cultural imperialism’ (1990), must surely be one of the most provocative in the recent literature concerning the history of mathematics and the nature and status of mathematical practice. There are several surprises in this title, beginning with the adjective ‘western’. According to Platonism, the grounding philosophy that informs the thinking of most mathematicians, mathematical truths lie beyond human experience, in an abstract realm set apart from language, culture, and history.
