Abstract

To analyze the formation mechanisms for oscillations in populations of tundra animals models are considered for: 1. 1) the “vegetation — lemmings — arctic fox” trophic chain; 2. 2) the lemming population with regard for age structure; 3. 3) the “vegetation — lemmings” community with regard for their spatial distribution. All models are presented in the form of differential equations and are numerically realized. Computer runs for all models produced the 3–4 year population oscillations which are typical for tundra communities. Approximate methods are proposed for a qualitative analysis of the models.
