Abstract

ABSTRACTThe Event‐Related Potential is assumed to be composed of several underlying component waveforms. Principal Components Analysis is a statistical technique that has been used to uncover the components by analysis of the observed waveform. The mathematical assumptions behind Principal Components Analysis are examined, and their plausibility in the ERP application is questioned. The problem of plausibility is serious because Principal Components Analysis may not recover component waveforms accurately if the assumptions behind the method are violated. The nature of the inaccuracies is illustrated by an analysis of simulated waveforms constructed from known components.
