Abstract
Studies in maximum power point tracking of a solar PV array are conducted through modelling of a solar PV system in various scenarios using MATLAB/Simulink. However, the studies conducted lack depth in modelling of PV system if Simulink toolboxes for PV array are used and risk running slower simulations because of integration of Simscape models with the rest of the system. Furthermore, those who use mathematical modelling lack flexibility in modifying parameters to simulate conditions such as partial shading. In this paper, a Suntech STP330 - 24/Vfw 330W polycrystalline solar module is modelled in MATLAB/Simulink to study the effects of partial shading on a 5kWp solar system. The PV system is mathematically modelled and verified in accordance with the datasheet parameters and found to ensure accurate replication of the real system with an error of 0.0237%. A dashboard of the system is created in Simulink to quickly alter varying irradiances of individual modules and the effects of PSC on the output power of a PV array are tested. This paper provides a complete modelling approach of the PV system in MATLAB/Simulink. The model achieves high level of accuracy, flexibility in tuning parameters, real time control of temperature and insolation, and provides a platform for future research to be conducted.
