Abstract

Water is one of the main elements of the environment which determine the existence of life on the Earth, affect the climate and limit the development of civilization. Water resources management requires constant monitoring in terms of its qualitative-quantitative values. Water quality models are important tools to test the effectiveness of alternative management plans on the water quality of water bodies. One of the tools that are used to solve problems of surface water pollution is modeling of changes which take place in rivers waters and associated water quality changes. In the last thirty years a rapid development of mathematical modeling of water resources quality has been observed. A number of computer models have been designed which are successfully applied in practice in many countries, including B&H. The main aim of this study was to develop and demonstrate use of a water quality model as a tool for evaluation of alternative water management scenarios for the river basin of Neretva, B&H. MIKE 11 model has demonstrated its applicability to simulation of pollution in streams, and therefore is an appropriate tool for decision making related to the quality of water resources.
