Abstract

Indian classical music is very renowned due to its sophistication and rhythmic diversities. Tala of Indian music represents rhythmic aspects in musical compositions. In this paper, we examined the patterns in Tala’s kaidas and paltas using formal grammar. Results indicate that the patterns in the paltas of Tala’s kaida exhibit cross-serial dependencies, which cannot be represented by a context-free grammar. Further, we had represented these patterns using mathematical model deep pushdown automata. The proposed technique can be applied for checking the correctness of the patterns used in Tala’s Kaidas and Paltas.
