Abstract

With Technological advancement in renewable energy sources, wind can be used as a backup source to charge a battery in a hybrid power plant and can be utilized on a regular basis. This paper presents a mathematical modeling of 1.5 KW wind turbine in MATLAB. Parameters such as Wind speed and Power coefficient of a wind turbine are varied and the performance of a wind turbine has been analyzed successfully. Comparison of wind velocity and tip speed ratio (TSR) is done mathematically and the performance of the wind turbine is observed by using MATLAB software. A small wind turbine with a capacity of 1.5 KW has been erected and installed on the terrace of an engineering college located in Maharashtra state. It has been found that a small wind turbine with a capacity of 1.5 KW can charge the battery of Solar–wind hybrid system especially when sun is not available but the wind is at a reasonable speed. Various tests are carried out on the developed mathematical Model of a wind turbine by varying the wind speed and Tip speed ratio. The performance is analyzed successfully and also compared with the actual results obtained from the installed wind turbine. It has been observed that in a city like Pune, the wind is very intermittent and at low speed. Hence the generated power from the wind could be utilized for charging a battery. This low wind speed issue can be tackled in an innovative way by adopting a designing a vertical axis wind turbine which responds to a low wind speed of 3 to 3.5 m/sec also. The results are found satisfactory and it could be utilized as a base-mark for further research.
