Abstract

A mathematical model is developed for describing light-switched expression of the chalcone synthase (CHS) promoter by tobacco BY-2 cells. The β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene was fused to the 2.0-kb Arabidopsis thaliana CHS promoter. This model considers two factors: a specific rate of light absorption by cells and an illumination time. The dependency of GUS production on the specific light absorption rate was characterized by using the Monod equation. The model explained the adaptation-like behavior that GUS production rates were suppressed by a prolonged illumination time.
