Abstract

James Metz found the three plaques shown in photograph 1 above a doorway of a Tokyo restaurant. As he reached for his camera to record this mathematical moment, he saw the thick brown borders as being lines that then allowed him to imagine a nice demonstration of the Pythagorean theorem. Figure 1 shows a geometric rendering of the design, with the three sides of the yellow triangle labeled a, b, and c. The four triangles are congruent right triangles.
