Abstract

The Waldmeier effect is considered for empirical parameters of the functions that approximate solar activity cycles nos. 8–23 according to the Zurich numbering system. The cycle amplitude is found to linearly depend on the mean rate of rise in solar activity during its rising phase. This relationship seems to be a fundamental property of 11-year cycles and may be a reason for differences in solar cycles.
