Abstract

The NHS continues to be in financial crisis and when cuts need to be made, someone is going to suffer. The latest disaster is the closure or curtailment of antenatal classes, as well as visits to maternity wards in a number of areas in England and Wales. The Department of Health expects the NHS to comply with the 2004 National Service Framework on maternity services, which says that good antenatal care should include access to parenting education and preparation for birth through classes, or other means. However the individual trusts must provide the funds. In some cases classes have been cut to just one and where antenatal classes have been closed down completely, trusts propose that midwives will make a long home visit to prepare women for the birth.
