Abstract
Booth Maternity Center in Philadelphia offers an alternative to traditional maternity care where parents have power in making decisions that affect them and childbirth becomes a meaningful, confidence-building experience. Utilization of the services provided has risen in the three-year existence of the program despite a falling birth rate. The primary care is provided by an obstetrician/nurse-midwife/pediatrician team, with nurse-midwives conducting 60% of outpatient visits and 70% of deliveries. Backup services for newborn intensive care are provided by Jefferson Hospital. The population served is comparable to the childbearing population of Philadelphia. There is consumer participation in the planning of patient care and a high degree of patient satisfaction.
