Abstract

The January issue of Pediatrics carried an article by Dr. Lucey1 concerning the current indications and results of fetal transfusions. He makes a flat statement concerning the indication for amniocentesis to the effect that a maternal Rh antibody titer of 1:16 in the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy constitutes an indication for amniocentesis. This statement should not go unchallenged. One must ask what the evidence is on which it is based, other than Liley's original papers, considering the fact that the hazards of amniocentesis including the possible enhancement of maternal sensitization are not yet fully established and that this procedure shou'd not be used indiscriminately.
