Abstract

To assess maternal mortality in Panama City Panama a retrospective analysis was conducted of all such deaths occurring at the Complejo Hospitalario Metropolitano de la Caja de Seguro Social in 1992-96. During this period the hospitals maternal mortality ratio was 49.5/100000 live births. Of the 12 deaths recorded 10 were attributable to direct obstetric causes. Five deaths were due to pre-eclampsia or eclampsia-related intracerebral hemorrhage two to hemorrhage by uterine rupture and placenta previa one to acute fatty liver with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy one to anesthesia complications and one to an amniotic fluid embolism. Cardiac disease was implicated in the two indirect deaths. One death (8.3%) occurred in the prenatal period three (25%) during delivery and eight (66.7%) in the 30 days after delivery. Although the absence of deaths due to infection reflects improved hospital care the high incidence of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia merits serious attention.
