Abstract

(BJOG. 2015;122(7):1002–1009) Both hypertensive disorders and antihypertensive medication use in early pregnancy may affect fetal development directly either through vascular dysfunction or teratogenic mechanisms. Studies have evaluated the possible link between the prevalence of specific birth defects and hypertension or its treatment. This case-control study tested hypotheses from previous studies to investigate whether defects associated with pharmacological treatment of hypertension might actually be associated with the underlying hypertension itself. Specific kinds of hypertensive disorders during different time windows during pregnancy were investigated.
