Abstract

This letter to the editor discusses cases of maternal HIV and the subsequent effect on infants. The letter expresses support for the view that antenatal HIV exposure does not compromise the infant’s ability to respond to vaccines. Some factors that may have influenced supporting studies are breastfeeding a delay in the bacillus Calmette-Gue´rin (BCG) vaccine and a change in the immunization schedule during the study. A response to this letter addressed the potential biases in the research study discussed. The response acknowledges all of these potential biases but asserts that the key point is a demonstrated positive response from the infants in the short term.
