Abstract

Both timely and appropriate maternal health care is required to prevent morbidity and mortality for the mother and child before, during, and after childbirth. Furthermore, maternal health services must broaden their scope to focus on improving overall well-being, including women's right to respectful care that enables informed choices during pregnancy and childbirth and quality care that adheres to evidence-based guidelines. This article describes the epidemiology and social determinants of maternal mortality and morbidity, the organization of maternity services at each stage of pregnancy and relevant issues related to respectful maternal care and migrant health.
