Abstract

Maternal characteristics are important aspects of the environment of the developing human infant that shape their physical and mental health over the long term. Identification of the earliest molecular changes that precede adverse developmental outcomes could help with early identification of children at risk. We examined whether selected maternal characteristics were associated with alterations in DNA methylation patterns in infants, and whether these modifications to the infant epigenome were associated with behavioral outcomes in toddlerhood.
