Abstract

Utilizing demographic data, this chapter highlights improvements in maternal and child health in the Andean region, including the countries of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Historically, the Andean region has lagged-behind other South American countries in terms of maternal and child well-being. Although there have been improvements in South America in maternal and child health over the past fifty years, the poorest health outcomes are still found in the Andean region. Examining health trends over time, this chapter highlights data on child and maternal mortality, fertility and reproductive health, as well as education and economic opportunities in the Andean region. Further improvements to the well-being of women and children will require greater access to reproductive and maternal healthcare, an increase in the status of women, and reductions in poverty in the region.
