Abstract

The wear behavior of a composite of a pure Al matrix reinforced with 20 vol% SiC particles against quenched 1045 steel was investigated. Material was found to transfer from the counterface to the wear surface of the composite, where a mechanically mixed layer (MML) was produced. A new mechanism, named the debris burial mechanism, for the formation of the mechanically mixed layer (MML) is proposed and discussed.
